While Sony decided to freeze investments in OLED TVs, LG is moving in the opposite direction. The company is launching its first commercial OLED TV in Korea. This is a model of 15 “(the largest market), the same seen by our team at CES 2009. So far, the only TV with this technology available to consumers was the Sony XEL-1, 11.
Made from organic ingredients, OLED displays (from Organic Light-emitting Diode) consume less energy and produce glare, without the need for lamps. Therefore, they are even thinner than current LED TVs.
In order to take off, the technology still faces two major obstacles (related to each other): the high cost (the LG model will sell for about $ 2,600) and the difficulty in producing large canvases.
